What is a multibeam echosounder?

A multibeam echosounder is a hydrographic sonar system used to map the seabed in high resolution. Unlike a single beam echo sounder, which measures depth directly beneath a vessel, a multibeam system uses multiple acoustic beams to capture a wide swath of the seafloor in a single pass. This allows survey teams to collect accurate bathymetric data faster and with greater coverage. Multibeam echosounders are used for hydrographic surveying, dredging support, offshore construction, cable route planning, habitat mapping, and navigation safety. Modern systems can also capture backscatter data to help identify seabed type and features. What is a sub-bottom profiler?

A sub-bottom profiler is an acoustic survey system that looks beneath the seabed surface. It uses low-frequency sound pulses to penetrate sediment layers and reveal buried geological structures, objects, and stratigraphy. Sub-bottom profilers are commonly used for offshore energy surveys, cable and pipeline route assessment, marine geology, dredging investigations, and environmental studies. By imaging sediment layers below the seafloor, surveyors can identify hazards, sediment thickness, buried debris, or changes in ground conditions before marine construction begins. GeoAcoustics sub-bottom profilers are engineered to provide a balance of penetration depth and vertical resolution, helping survey teams make better decisions with clearer subsurface data.

What is a side scan sonar?

A side scan sonar is an imaging sonar system used to create detailed acoustic images of the seabed and underwater objects. Instead of measuring depth, it produces high-resolution sonar imagery that highlights objects, textures, and seabed features. Side scan sonar is widely used for search and recovery, wreck location, pipeline and cable inspection, harbour security, habitat mapping, and marine archaeology. The system transmits sound pulses to both sides of a towfish or vehicle and records the reflected echoes to generate a detailed image of the seafloor. Because it can quickly identify objects and anomalies over large areas, side scan sonar is one of the most effective tools for underwater target detection and seabed characterisation.
