Key facts about our company
At GeoAcoustics, we build the sonar systems that help you understand what lies beneath. Our hydroacoustic technologies, bathymetric sonar, side scan sonar, and sub-bottom profilers, are designed for reliable data acquisition in the most demanding marine environments. From seabed mapping and buried object detection to habitat assessment and infrastructure survey, we give you the tools to collect the data you need, whether from uncrewed platforms or conventional vessels.

Nearly half a century in sonar
GeoAcoustics Ltd has been a partner for the offshore energy, subsea, and marine survey sectors since 1978. Through this time we have had two different corporate owners but today we are an independent company dedicated to ensuring we provide the best technologies and services to our customers all over the world. Further, today we run a highly sustainable operation, and continue to reduce the carbon footprint at our HQ in Great Yarmouth, UK.
The company was founded as ORE Ltd by Dave Stone and Dick Stafford, starting as a leasing operation of offshore research equipment including Side Scan, Profiling, SBL/LBL positioning and Acoustic Telemetry.
ORE Ltd was acquired by electrical engineering firm Ferranti, becoming Ferranti O.R.E Ltd.
Ferranti O.R.E moved to the current site at Gapton Hall Industrial Estate, Great Yarmouth, UK.
Equipment manufacturing started onsite. Including the 5430A & 5420A transmitters.
The first TPIIM USL Tracking systems were sold. Enhanced in 2002 and more recently in 2019, these systems are now used by many Navies around the world.
Following a management buyout from Ferranti, the company changed its name to GeoAcoustics Ltd.
The SS940 DFSS was launched. It was enhanced in 1998 and also supplied for Naval operations.
The first generation of the GeoSwath bathymetric system was released.
GeoAcoustics Ltd. was acquired by Kongsberg Maritime and became Kongsberg GeoAcoustics Ltd.
Pulsar side scan sonar was released.
